Vanara Sené building Rama Setu
This narrative bas-relief is carved into the inner walls of the balustrade surrounding the inner sanctum of the Shiva Temple, the main temple of the Prambanan temple complex.
It depicts a scene where the Vanara Sené (Monkey Army) is building the Rama Setu (Rama’s Bridge), a land bridge to the island of Lanka from India, and is based on an episode narrated in Ramayana. As you can see, there are three figures standing on the left. These are, Rama at the center, his brother Lakshmana on the left, and Nila, the commander-in-chief of the Vanara Sené, on the right. Nila is leading his monkey warriors, who are carrying stones, to build the bridge.
