Cusco: Inca agricultural terraces

Inca agricultural terraces
Because the terrain covered by the Inca Empire was mostly mountainous, the Inca resorted to a farming technique known as terrace farming. The famous Rice Terraces of Bali employ similar farming techniques.

To enable farming, the Inca engineers created flat surfaces along the mountain slopes. To provide water to the crops, they built sophisticated aqueducts to channel the rainwater through terraces.

Depending on the elevation of the terraces, the Inca farmers cultivated different crops, and depending on the season, they rotated the crops.

The ruins of agricultural terraces can be found all over the Cuzco region, including the citadel of Machu Picchu.
