Tombstone of Archbishop Gonzalo de Mena y Roelas
Archbishop Gonzalo de Mena y Roelas, originally a priest from Toledo, was the archbishop of Seville in the 14th century. He was the founder of Cartuja de Sevilla, a Carthusian monastery (Charterhouse) and was known for his humanitarian work, especially for the people of African origin.
The marble tombstone shown in the image is mounted on a wall near his tomb located in the Santiago Chapel. The tombstone reads:
VERDADERA VIRTUD CON Q DI MAIOR RESPLANDOR A MI ILUSTRE LINAJE ME LEVANTO A LA SILLA OBISPAL DE CALAHORRA Y DESPUES A LA DE BURGOS ULTIMAMENTE FUI ARÇOBISPO DE SEVILLA. BIVI INCULPABLE Y NO CONTENTO CON PROCURAR COMO BUEN PASTOR AUMENTAR LA GREI DEL SEÑOR QUE APACENTAVA FUNDÉ Y DOTÉ AMPLISIMAMENTE ESTE MONASTERIO PARA QUE EN EL HALLASEN MUCHAS ALMAS CARRERA DE SALVACION Y MUCHOS POBRES PERMANECIENTE EL SOCORRO DE MI LIBERALIDAD PERDI LA VIDA EN TIEMPO DE PESTE POQ APLACADO EL SEÑOR EN MI MITIGASE SU JUSTA YRA CON MIS OVEJAS Y DESPUES DE LARGOS DIAS ESTUVE SEPULTADO EN LA IGLESIA METROPOLITANA DE MI CATHEDRAL POR DILIGENCIA Y LAGRIMAS DE MIS ESPIRITUALES HIJOS FUI TRAIDO A ESTA YGLESIA DONDE CERCADO DE SUS PIADOSOS TRABAJOS QUE SON FRUCTOS DE MI CHARIDAD Y ZELO ESPERANDO LA SEGUNDA ESTO REPOSO EL EL SEÑOR DON GONZALO DE MENA NATURAL DE TOLEDO MURIO AÑO MCCCCI FUE TRASLADADO EN MDXCVII.-
The last line reads – Died in 1401 and was moved in 1597
