Inner sanctum of a temple in Besakih
The image shows the inner sanctum of a shrine in Besakih, which is a temple complex located 30 miles northeast of Ubud in Bali, Indonesia.
Known as the Mother Temple, Besakih has several shrines dedicated to Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma, and is the holiest place in Bali for the Balinese Hindus. It is built on the slopes of Mount Agung, which is an active volcano. Although built more than 1000 years ago, the shrines in Besakih are actively used by the Balinese, who come here from all over the island to participate in various festivals and private temple ceremonies. Besakih was declared a World Heritage Site in 1995.
