Davane playing male musician

Davane playing male musician
The image shows a bracket figure of a male musician playing a small instrument named davane, which is a two-sided drum-like percussion instrument played with a stick slightly curved at the end. He is accompanied by two male musicians at the bottom who are playing the dolu, which is also a two-sided drum-like percussion instrument played with hands.

As you can see from the image, the male musician is sporting a mustache (upward pointing handlebar style) and a beard (neatly-trimmed boxed style), which is probably a reflection of men’s fashion in those days. As for his hair, he has a long ponytail held up behind his head. Like his female counterparts in the bracket figures, he is wearing a lot of stylistic jewelry, including large loop earrings, armbands, and necklaces. Because of stance, it appears he is dancing while beating the davane. As with the other bracket figures, the background is a finely carved creeper.

This male musician is one of the only three male figures among 42 bracket figures (38 outside and 4 inside) in the temple and is located on the last pillar on the south side of exterior wall surrounding the the front portion of temple, known as the navaranga. Each of these figures is attached to a bracket placed at an angle just below the eaves of the temple, with its base mounted just below the capital of a pillar.

This bracket figure is located on the eighth section (S8) of the south side wall and its number is 18 in the Navaraga layout.
