South library inside the outer enclosure
The image shows the south library building inside the outer enclosure of the Angkor Wat Temple complex in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This is an independent building situated south of east-west axis on the outer enclosure.
A view from the top level of temple shows its exact location. This view also shows the north library, which is identical in design to the south library and is located at the same distance to the north as the south library to the south of the imaginary east-west axis that runs in the middle of the temple. In other words, they are symmetrical about the temple’s east-west axis.
There are two more libraries inside the temple complex. Check the south side library located in the courtyard of the temple.
Although the exact purpose of the libraries is not known, it is believed that they were used as shrines in addition to being repositories of religious manuscripts.
