The caryatid (female figure used as a column) shown in the image was one of the six columns standing in the south side porch to Erechtheion, a temple built by the famous sculptor Phidias and dedicated to the legendary King Erichthonius on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. It is now on display at the Acropolis Museum in Athens.

The original caryatids were moved to the museums for safekeeping. Five of them are now in the new Acropolis Museum, and the sixth, which was taken by Lord Elgin in the 19th century, is in the British Museum in London.
