Nike of Paionios
The image shows a restored statue of Nike that once stood on a pillar near the Temple of Zeus, which is located on the Sanctuary of Olympia in Greece. This beautifully sculpted statue was restored from the fragments excavated near the Temple of Zeus and is now on display at the Olympia Archaeological Museum in Olympia, Greece.
According to the inscription at the base of this statue, the Messenians and Naupactians dedicated it to commemorate their victory against the Lacedaemonians (Spartans?) in the Peloponnesian war.
This Parian marble statue was carved by the famous sculptor Paionois of Mendi around 421 BCE. It was sculpted to give an impression that Nike, the goddess of victory, was triumphantly descending from Mount Olympus.
