Castle of Agios Nikolaos on the Scenic Oia Village
The image shows a scenic view of the Oia Village located on the island of Santorini, which belongs to Greece. Santorini is part of the Cyclades group of islands in the Aegean Sea and is one of the most visited places in Greece. Although Fira is the biggest town in Santorini, the Oia Village is the most scenic and a photographer’s paradise.
What we see now is the remnants of Thera, an island that was the center of a massive volcanic eruption happened 3600 years ago during the height of Minoan civilization. The outline formed by the islands created after the explosion has the shape of a caldera.
The buildings are on the slope of a cliff that is part of the caldera. You can see the ruins of the Castle of Agios Nikolaos, which is believed to have existed in 1480 CE but was destroyed by the earthquakes in later years.
