Eastern Courtyard with the Main Hall and East Wing Entrances
The image shows two façades of Elephanta Main Cave (Cave 1) at right angles to each other: the eastern entrance to the Main Hall on the right and the entrance to the East Wing on the left, both sharing a common courtyard. Carved directly out of the basalt rock of the hillside, these pillared entrances appear naturally integrated with the contours of the surrounding cliff. Unlike the pillars at the eastern entrance to the main hall, the pillars at the East Wing entrance appear smoother and less weathered because they are not original and were reconstructed using modern restoration techniques.
Like the Main Hall, the East Wing also contains an inner sanctum housing a Shiva Linga. Since both shrines are built on raised platforms, short flights of steps lead to their entrances. As seen in the image, the adhiṣṭhāna (temple base) of the East Wing appears to be at a slightly higher level than that of the Main Hall.
In ancient times, the eastern entrance to the Main Hall likely served as the principal entrance for devotees, as Hindu temples traditionally face east to provide a direct view of the inner sanctum from the entrance. Notice the circular platform in the courtyard, approximately 16 feet in diameter and 2 inches in height, where a statue of Nandi, Shiva’s vahana (vehicle), once stood. In Shiva temples, Nandi is typically positioned facing the inner sanctum, symbolizing constant vigilance and devotion toward Shiva.
Today, visitors generally exit the cave through this eastern entrance after entering from the northern side, providing a gradual transition from the dimly lit interior to the bright open courtyard outside.
