Façade of an Unfinished Cave Temple
The image shows the façade of Cave 2, an unfinished cave temple located less than 1,000 ft east of the Elephanta Main Cave (Cave 1). Facing east, the façade bears a resemblance to the northern entrance of the Main Cave, featuring four rock-cut pillars supporting the front of the excavation. As seen in the image, the façade consists of four square pillars flanked by two unfinished side chambers. Not visible in the image are the two cisterns associated with this cave. See “Rock-Cut Cistern for Water Storage and Management” for a photograph and description of one of these cisterns.
The cave provides a rare opportunity to study the excavation process itself. Visitors who have already explored Main Cave (Cave 1) can readily observe the contrast between completed architectural elements, such as the pillars, and unfinished areas where the rock was only partially removed. These features illustrate the enormous effort required to transform a solid basalt hillside into a functional cave temple and provide valuable insights into the engineering techniques, planning, and construction practices of the craftsmen who created it.
In many ways, the unfinished state of the cave is as informative as the completed monuments. It demonstrates that these remarkable temples were created by skilled artisans using ingenious yet relatively simple tools and methods. Far from being the work of a “superhuman agency,” as the Portuguese administrator Dom João de Castro famously remarked in the sixteenth century, the cave stands as a testament to the ingenuity, perseverance, and engineering mastery of ancient Indian craftsmen.
