Southern Wall
This image shows the southern wall of the mukhamantapa (entrance hall) of Cave 3. In contrast to the richly sculptured walls of the Main Cave, this wall is completely plain and devoid of sculptural panels, niches, or decorative carvings.
The image also reveals the massive basalt rock from which the cave was excavated. The rough texture of the ceiling and portions of the wall preserves evidence of the excavation process, while the plain wall demonstrates that large areas of the cave were intentionally left unadorned or were never decorated. Together, these features provide valuable insight into the methods of rock-cut excavation employed by the ancient artisans.
