A traditional manji cargo vessel
Captured during the Queen Abbakka cruise on the Nethravathi–Gurupur River estuary, this close-up view shows a traditional wooden cargo vessel, locally known as a manji, resting along the bank of the Gurupur River at the Bengre waterfront in Mangaluru.
Visible in the image are its deep wooden hull, raised bow, cabin, tall mast, rigging, and cargo-handling equipment. The letters MSV painted before the vessel’s name indicate that it is a Mechanised Sailing Vessel. It represents the modern form of the traditional manji with sails, retaining much of its characteristic design but fitted with an engine.
Despite the weathered appearance of its wooden hull, the vessel appears to be operational. Equipment, containers, and other supplies are visible aboard, while the small boat alongside and activity around the vessel further suggest that it remains in use.
The land behind the vessel is lined with coconut palms, with the dome and minaret of a mosque visible in the distance.
