Vishnu and Garuda Temples
The image shows two of the temples in the Prambanan temple complex (also known as Rara Jonggrang complex) located 11 miles northeast of Yogyakarta in Indonesia. The temple in the near-end of the image is dedicated to Vishnu, one of the Hindu Trinity, and the smaller temple in the far-end is dedicated to Grauda, Vishnu’s vehicle.
Built around 900 AD by the rulers of the Sanjaya dynasty of Mataram Kingdom, the Prambanan complex houses multiple temples dedicated to the gods and their vehicles, and rishis (sages) of Hindu mythology.
