Gothic vaulted arcade
Built sometime in the beginning of the 14th century, these arcades showcase fine Gothic vaulting with stone ribs converging at bosses on the ceiling. Whereas the Baroque-style blue-and-white azulejo tile panels that adorn the walls of the cloister were crafted in the 18th century. This is a testament to the harmonious blend of medieval architecture with the later Portuguese decorative art.
Notice the patterns on the floor. The darker circular medallions radiate trapezoidal shapes — a floor that fittingly complements the architecture and art surrounding it.
