Quinta da Regaleira: Eastern Grotto Interior

Interior of the Eastern Grotto
The image shows the interior of the Eastern Grotto, with branching passages forming one of the endpoints of the extensive underground tunnel network connected to the Initiation Well.

The rock-cut, cave-like appearance of the tunnels was deliberately created by cleverly incorporating porous stones reportedly transported from the Atlantic coast near Nazaré and Peniche. Even the columns visible in this image are artificial constructions, although they appear to be natural rock formations. The architect apparently employed these techniques to create an artistic illusion, deliberately blurring the distinction between the natural landscape and man-made structures.
