Waterfall Lake
The image shows the picturesque Waterfall Lake reached through the underground tunnels from the bottom of the Initiation Well. As seen in the image a thin curtain of water cascading from the hillside into a pond, surrounded by a stone bridge and a landscape of trees and vegetation. To the visitor, the entire scene gives the impression of being a natural grotto and waterfall. But it is anything but natural. Like the tunnels and grottoes, the waterfall and lake are part of a meticulously engineered landscape. Luigi Manini, the architect of Quinta da Regaleira, designed the waterfall by directing water through pipes concealed within the artificial stone bridge, creating yet another artistic illusion that blurs the boundary between nature and human-made structures.
