St. Francis receiving the stigmata
The image shows a beautiful stained glass window depicting St. Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata. It is made by Arnao de Flandes Jr., in 1546 and is in the Capilla de San Francisco, a chapel dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi situated inside the Cathedral of Seville located in Andalusia, Spain.
At the center is St. Francis looking up to vision of a Seraph with multiple wings. According to tradition, this vision occurred in 1224, while he was fasting and praying on the remote mountain of La Verna in Italy. He reported seeing a six-winged seraph bearing the image of the crucified Christ. He was later found to bear wounds mirroring Christ’s own, i.e., in his hands, feet, and side, making him the first person in Christian history recorded to have received the stigmata. He died two years later — nearly blind from a chronic eye ailment and in continual pain from the wounds — and was canonized quickly, within two years of his death, by his former patron Pope Gregory IX.
The scene depicting St. Francis receiving the stigmata episode is used widely in Christian art, appearing in numerous Catholic churches all over the World, including on the azulejo-tiled exterior of the Capela das Almas in Porto, Portugal.
