Mahayogi Shiva in Meditation
Carved into the northern wall of the West Wing of Elephanta Caves Cave 1, this sculptural panel depicts Shiva seated on a lotus pedestal in meditation. Similar to the Mahayogi Shiva panel in the main hall, this relief portrays Shiva as a yogi (ascetic) and is likewise believed to reflect the influence of Lakulisha.

As seen in the image, the relief is heavily weathered and damaged, making many of the surrounding figures difficult to identify clearly.

Seated in padmasana (lotus posture) upon a lotus pedestal, Shiva appears deeply absorbed in meditation. The lotus pedestal is supported by two figures, possibly nagas (serpents). Flanking Shiva are two male figures — one seated to his right and the other to his left, the latter appearing to hold a banana-like object in his right hand. Below the figure on Shiva’s right is a rishi (sage) with a beard. Above Shiva’s head are Brahma and Vidyadhara couples flying in the celestial realm.

The ascetic characterization of Shiva in this panel has led some scholars to associate the image with Lakulisha (lakula – club/staff; isha – lord), the teacher — and possibly founder — of the Pashupata sect of Shaivism, who is regarded as an incarnation of Shiva.
