Unfinished northern Chamber
The image shows an unfinished chamber on the northern side of Cave 2. Unlike the more developed areas of the cave, this space retains a distinctly rough and irregular appearance. Large portions of the walls and ceiling remain only partially excavated, and numerous tool marks are still visible on the rock surfaces. The uneven floor and unrefined rock faces suggest that work had not progressed beyond the early stages of excavation when the project was abandoned.
The chamber provides valuable evidence of the methods employed by ancient craftsmen as they carved the cave from the living basalt hillside. In completed cave temples, such surfaces would normally have been carefully dressed and incorporated into a finished architectural design. Here, however, the unfinished state of the chamber preserves a rare record of the excavation process itself.
Whether this space was intended to become a subsidiary shrine, a side chamber, or part of a larger architectural scheme remains uncertain. Whatever its intended purpose, the chamber stands as a reminder that Cave 2 was abandoned before its final form could emerge, preserving a unique glimpse into the creation of one of India’s remarkable rock-cut monuments.
