Standing about 85 ft (26 m) tall on the waterfront at Apollo Bunder, overlooking the Arabian Sea, and located in the heart of the bustling city of Mumbai, the Gateway of India is one of India’s most iconic landmarks.

The Gateway of India was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India in 1911. Constructed from yellow basalt in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style, the monument was designed by Scottish architect George Wittet and completed in 1924. Today, it remains one of India’s most photographed monuments and an enduring symbol of Mumbai’s rich history and cultural heritage.

It is a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike. To enter the Gateway of India, visitors pass through a security checkpoint equipped with metal detectors. As seen in the image, visitors enjoy strolling around the spacious courtyard to admire the monument, relax by the waterfront, and take photographs. To board a ferry, visitors walk around the monument to its sea-facing side, where ferries depart for destinations such as Elephanta Island.

A visitor information board near the Gateway of India provides a map of the Colaba Tourist District and highlights many of the neighborhood’s historic landmarks and attractions. See Colaba Tourist District Information Board near the Gateway of India for additional information.
