A Plowing Scene
Mounted on the wall of the President’s Room (Sala do Presidente) at Palácio da Bolsa in Porto, Portugal, this large oil painting, created in 1890 by Portuguese painter João Marques de Oliveira (1853–1927), depicts a young man in a tunic plowing a field with two oxen, while a woman in the distance appears to be sowing seeds. The painting is enclosed in an ornate gilded frame decorated with laurel leaves and ribbons.
The scene evokes agricultural life in ancient Roman times, when farming was central to the economy and oxen-drawn wooden plows were commonly used to cultivate the land.
The painting represents Agriculture, one of the economic activities represented in the decorative program of Palácio da Bolsa, the historic headquarters of Porto’s Commercial Association.
