View of the Interior – Looking Westward
Captured from a vantage point near the crossing, this view shows the central nave of Porto Cathedral looking west toward the main entrance.
The Romanesque Nave and the Baroque High Altar image shows the eastward view captured from the main entrance.
As seen in the image, the nave in the foreground is dominated by simple Romanesque architecture, symmetrical about its east-west axis. The central space of the nave is filled with pews on both sides, arranged in the traditional two-block format, facing the altar, with the central aisle serving as the processional path.
Tall, massive granite piers support a series of Romanesque arches beneath the barrel-vaulted ceiling. Above the main entrance at the far end are the modern organ loft and the cathedral’s iconic rose window.
