Rose window above the pipe organ
Viewed from the nave, this stunningly beautiful stained-glass rose window is set within the west façade of Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto).
As the name suggests, when illuminated it appears like a rose with its circular arrangement of petal-like sections radiating from the central oculus. The eight large petal-shaped lobes of the rose window contain beautiful stained-glass figures, most likely depicting Catholic saints. Although restored/replaced several times, it still retains its original Romanesque form and remains one of the best-known surviving elements of the cathedral’s medieval architecture.
Also seen in the image is the cathedral’s modern pipe organ positioned directly in front of the rose window. Despite the contrast between contemporary craftsmanship and medieval architecture, the organ blends harmoniously with the rose window, and forms one of the cathedral’s most striking views of the interior.
