Coat of Arms of the Associação Comercial do Porto
The image shows a bronze plaque mounted on a wall in the Sala das Assembleias Gerais (General Assembly Room) at Palácio da Bolsa in Porto. It is dated “Anno de MDCCCLXXXIX” (1889) and shows the coat of arms of the Associação Comercial do Porto, a commercial association that owns Palácio da Bolsa and has its headquarters in the building.
As seen in the image, a crowned shield in four parts, framed by a laurel wreath, combines Portuguese arms, a caduceus and anchor, a sailing ship with cargo, and the arms of Porto. Ribbons read “Associação Commercial” and “Porto.”
Above it, a bronze relief of a seated figure with children sits beneath the Latin inscription “Labor et libertas urgent nos,” roughly translated as “Work and liberty urge us on.”
