Prince Henry the Navigator
Photographed at Praça do Infante D. Henrique in Porto, Portugal, this image shows the imposing Monument to Prince Henry the Navigator (1394–1460), also known as Infante Dom Henrique, an important figure in Portugal’s Age of Discovery.

This plaque at the monument describes the monument: Prince Henry the Navigator – Plaque

Designed by Portuguese sculptor Tomás Costa, construction of the monument began in 1894 in the presence of King Carlos I, commemorating the 500th anniversary of Prince Henry’s birth. The monument was inaugurated in 1900.

As seen in the image, the bronze statue depicts Prince Henry dressed as a warrior, standing beside a globe and extending his right arm to point symbolically toward overseas territories. The statue rises above an ornate stone pedestal decorated with the Portuguese coat of arms and elaborate carvings. At its base are bronze allegorical sculptural groups representing the triumph of Portuguese navigation and faith.

In the background is the red iron-and-glass Mercado Ferreira Borges, built in the 19th century.

Born in Porto in 1394, Prince Henry was a son of King João I of Portugal. Although known as the Navigator, he was primarily a patron of maritime exploration rather than a navigator himself. His support for expeditions along the western coast of Africa contributed to Portugal’s maritime expansion during the 15th century.

The Ponte do Infante Dom Henrique, one of the six bridges, spanning the Douro River between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, is named in his honor.
