Scenic view of the Douro River
Looking upstream from the upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge, this image captures the scenic beauty of the Douro River as it bends through the steep-sided landscape of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. The elevated viewpoint provides a superb view of the river far below, with boats navigating its waters and roads following the base of the rugged banks.

Three of Porto’s bridges can be seen spanning the Douro in succession. Closest is the Ponte do Infante D. Henrique, a modern concrete road bridge with a single arch, completed in 2003. Beyond it is the historic Ponte de Maria Pia, a now-decommissioned iron railway bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel’s company and completed in 1877. Farther upstream is the Ponte de São João, the modern railway bridge that replaced Maria Pia for rail traffic in 1991.
The sweeping bend of the Douro, along with its steep terrain on both sides, makes it an awesome sight. The combination of rocky banks, patches of greenery, hillside buildings, bridges, and boats creates one of the most scenic views of the Douro from the upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge.
