Garbhagriha with a Shiva Linga mounted on a rock-cut pedestal
This image shows the garbhagriha of Cave 4 as viewed through its doorway. The garbhagriha is a square chamber carved into the rear wall at the center of the mukhamantapa (portico).
As seen in the image, a Shiva Linga, measuring 23 inches (58 cm) in diameter, stands at the center of the shrine, mounted on a square rock-cut pīṭha (pedestal) measuring approximately 6 ft 11 in (2.1 m) on each side. Unlike Cave 3, where only the pedestal survives, the Shiva Linga of Cave 4, remains in its original position. The linga is carved from a different, darker, and harder stone and was mounted onto the pedestal after the shrine was excavated.
