Shiva Linga
This image shows the Shiva Linga, measuring 23 inches (58 cm) in diameter, mounted on a rock-cut pīṭha (pedestal), measuring approximately 6 ft 11 in (2.1 m) on each side, inside the garbhagriha of Cave 4. Unlike the surrounding basalt from which the shrine was excavated, the linga is carved from a separate, darker, and harder stone and was mounted onto the pīṭha after the sanctum was completed.
The pīṭha is carved directly from the living rock and consists of a broad rectangular pedestal supporting the linga. At its center is a square socket into which the linga is fitted.
Also visible is a rock-cut depression on the floor to the right of the pedestal. Its carefully cut shape indicates that it was intentionally excavated, although its original function remains uncertain.
