Bronze Bell in the North Tower
This close-up captures one of the bells housed in the north tower of Porto Cathedral, seen through a pointed granite archway. The bell hangs from a wooden yoke with a scalloped, Baroque-style profile, its bronze surface showing the green patina that comes with centuries of weathering.
Bells like this were traditionally cast in bronze, an alloy of roughly 75–80% copper and 20–25% tin. Beside it is a small mechanical striking hammer, likely a electrically-operated later addition.
