Wooden Pedestal of a Crucifix and Hunting-Scene Azulejo Panel
Standing in front of a window bay is a large, elegantly carved wooden pedestal that once supported a Crucifix. An earlier panoramic photograph of the Casa do Cartório, taken in 2017, shows the Crucifix and pedestal together in the Archive Room. In the present arrangement, the two have been separated: the Crucifix is mounted above a window bay on the southern wall of the Archive Room, while its elaborate wooden pedestal is displayed here in the adjoining Chapter House.
The window bay shown in the image is the northernmost of three window bays on the western wall of the Chapter House, next to the middle bay containing the ornate wooden chair. The lateral walls of the window bay are covered with blue-and-white azulejos, continuing the tile decoration throughout this section of the room.
The northern wall beside the window bay is covered with a beautifully crafted azulejo panel depicting a hunting scene. As seen in the image, a mounted hunter carrying a hunting horn rides through a wooded landscape, accompanied by another figure. The scene is enclosed within an elaborate Baroque border composed of scrolls, foliage, architectural motifs, and small figures.
