Western facade of the Casa do Cabido
The Casa do Cabido is a three-story building attached to Porto Cathedral and extending along the western side of the cloister. The image shows the western facade, where only the two upper floors are visible.
Each floor historically served a different purpose, reflecting the administrative, ceremonial, and practical functions of the Cathedral Chapter, a body of clergy established to assist in the religious and administrative life of the cathedral and to advise the bishop or archbishop on certain matters.
The ground floor, not visible here, historically served as a granary and storage space and consists of four interconnected rooms. The middle floor (first visible floor) also consists of four interconnected rooms and today houses the Treasure Room (Sala do Tesouro). The top floor (second visible floor), adjoining the upper western terrace of the cloister, contains the former Archive Room (Cartório), the magnificent Chapter House (Sala Capitular), and the Antecabido.
