Palácio da Bolsa Court Room: A Session in the Court by José Veloso Salgado

Large historical painting by José Veloso Salgado depicting a court session, on display at the Court Room (Sala do Tribunal) of Palácio da Bolsa, Porto, Portugal.

A Session in the Court
The painting shown in the image is the work of Portuguese artist José Maria Veloso Salgado (1864–1945) and is displayed on the rear wall of the Court Room (Sala do Tribunal) at Palácio da Bolsa in Porto, Portugal.

Titled Sessão do Tribunal da Bolsa na época da sua fundação (Session of the Stock Exchange Court at the Time of Its Foundation), signed and dated by JV Salgado in January 1901, this magnificent painting depicts an animated court scene attended by men dressed in medieval clothing.

Unlike the spacious Court Room in which it is displayed, the scene depicted in the painting takes place in a small, crowded chamber. The central figure, dressed in a long red robe and dark cap, stands before the gathering and appears to preside over the proceedings. Surrounding him are several men, some examining documents and others observing the proceedings. In the foreground, a man dressed in grey sits on a wooden stool, apparently engaged in an exchange with the central figure in the red robe.

The medieval-style clothing, stone walls, arched openings, and wooden furnishings suggest a period considerably earlier than the establishment of Porto’s Commercial Court in 1834. A small heraldic panel and an inscription on the rear wall add to the historical character of the scene.
