Palácio da Bolsa Court Room: Bustling Quayside by Veloso Salgado

Large oil painting of men handling cargo on a quay beside sailing ships, in a gilded frame in the Court Room (Sala do Tribunal) of Palácio da Bolsa, Porto, Portugal

Maritime Commerce
A large oil painting, signed “J V Salgado” and dated 1901, on display in the Court Room (Sala do Tribunal) of Palácio da Bolsa in Porto. It shows a bustling quayside on what appears to be the Douro River.

As seen in the image, several workers are engaged in cargo handling while richly dressed merchants look on. In the foreground, two workers are hauling a wooden barrel (probably wine) up timber ramps, and others handle barrels and cargo nearby. In the background, sailing ships with tall masts and partly furled sails are moored along the river below a hillside town, possibly Porto.

Porto has a long association with wine. The wooden barrels suggest the importance of the wine trade to Porto, and the river suggests how wine was transported.

The painting illustrates Porto’s maritime commerce, which is fitting for a room built for its Commercial Court.
