Porto: Palácio da Bolsa – The Hall of Nations (Pátio das Nações)

Two-story Hall of Nations at Palácio da Bolsa in Porto, Portugal, with a glass-and-iron dome, painted coats of arms, galleries, and geometric ceramic floor.

The Hall of Nations
Surrounded by two-story galleries, the Hall of Nations (Pátio das Nações) is the rectangular central courtyard of Palácio da Bolsa (Stock Exchange Palace) in Porto, Portugal. This is where visitors assemble before proceeding to the rooms and halls on the upper floor.

The spacious hall is symmetrical along both axes and is illuminated by natural light filtering through the magnificent glass-and-iron dome that covers the courtyard.

One of the most striking decorative elements is the series of painted coats of arms, each enclosed within a rectangular panel, arranged around the hall just below the dome. These represent nations with which Portugal maintained commercial and diplomatic relations during the 19th century, reflecting Porto’s importance as an international trading center.

The eye-catching geometric ceramic floor, inspired by Greco-Roman designs discovered at Pompeii, adds another decorative dimension to the hall.

Palácio da Bolsa was built by the Commercial Association of Porto (Associação Comercial do Porto) on the site of a former Franciscan convent, which was largely destroyed by fire in 1832. Construction of the palace began in 1842, and the building became an important center of Porto’s commercial and economic activities. It housed the Porto Stock Exchange until the mid-1990s.
