Baptistery of Porto Cathedral
Situated near the main entrance on the left side, this enclosure is the baptistery of Porto Cathedral, where infants, children, and often adults receive the sacrament of baptism in the Catholic tradition. The centerpiece of the ceremony is the font, a beautifully carved marble basin atop a pedestal.
Above the font, mounted on the back wall, is a bronze bas-relief inspired by the event on which the sacrament of baptism is based. Attributed to Teixeira Lopes the elder (José Joaquim Teixeira Lopes), who sculpted it in 1897, this exquisite relief depicts John the Baptist baptizing Christ in the Jordan River. As seen in the image, Christ kneels with hands joined near the water’s edge while John pours water over his head using a scallop shell, a traditional attribute of the saint, and holds his customary cross-staff wrapped in a banner.
Flanking the font are two kneeling stools used for the baptismal ceremony. Standing beside the basin on the left is the Paschal candle, a tall white candle marked with colored bands, usually lit during the Easter Vigil.
Enclosing the baptistery is a black wrought-iron gate, richly decorated with floral motifs. The red cord strung between the gates indicates that the space is closed off from public entry.
