Porto Cathedral: Chapel of São Pantaleão in the Left Transept

Chapel of São Pantaleão (Saint Pantaleon) in the left transept of Porto Cathedral, Porto, Portugal

Chapel of São Pantaleão
Situated in the left (north) transept of Porto Cathedral, this chapel is dedicated to São Pantaleão (Saint Pantaleon), the physician and martyr who served as the patron saint of Porto for nearly five centuries. Although Nossa Senhora da Vandoma (Our Lady of Vendôme) was officially recognized as the city’s patroness in 1982, São Pantaleão continues to occupy an important place in Porto’s religious history. His statue also appears among the saints represented on the magnificent Baroque high altarpiece in the cathedral’s sanctuary.

In front stands the altar, richly decorated with intricate geometric patterns in poly-chrome marble, contrasting with the gilded woodwork above. Behind it rises a magnificent gilded Baroque altarpiece, contained in a niche framed by a Romanesque arch. At its center of this altarpiece is the statue of São Pantaleão, shown with his hands and legs bound, symbolizing his martyrdom. Above the saint is a large devotional painting, flanked by two smaller paintings set within the elaborate carved woodwork.

Above the chapel, a small stained-glass window allows natural light into the transept. Beneath the window is a sculptural relief set within a niche.
