Palace at Knossos: Jars at “The Magazines of the Great Pithoi”

Magazines of Pithois
The image shows a collection of giant Pithoi jars found in one place by Sir Arthur Evans, the British archaeologist who excavated the Palace of Knossos located on the island of Crete, Greece. He named the place “The Magazines of Giant Pithoi.”

Pithoi jars were likely used as storage devices for liquids, grains, dried fish and olives. Several hundreds of them were found in the ruins of the Palace at Knossos. Because of their size, they were typically placed on the ground floors. Pithois are differentiated based on their size, the number of handles and decoration on the outer surface.
