A Bird’s-Eye View from Porto Cathedral Belfry
Captured from the southern belfry of Porto Cathedral, this magnificent bird’s-eye view showcases the remarkable engineering of the Dom Luís I Bridge, which has served Porto for nearly 140 years. As seen in the image, almost the full span of the bridge is visible, with its enormous arched iron trusswork rising between the lower and upper decks.
Notice the two-car modern Metro train crossing the upper deck. The Porto Metro has been using the upper deck since 2005, nearly 120 years after the bridge was completed—a testament to the adaptability and durability of its 19th-century engineering.
Visible beyond the bridge are the hilltop neighborhoods of Vila Nova de Gaia, including the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar, a 16th-century monastery famous for its unusual circular church and cloister, and Jardim do Morro. The steep terrain visible in the image also helps explain why the bridge was built on two levels: the lower deck connects the riverfront areas, while the upper deck connects the much higher ground on both sides of the Douro River.
