Designed by Théophile Seyrig, a former associate of Gustave Eiffel, and completed in 1886, this two-level iron bridge connects Porto on the left with Vila Nova de Gaia on the right. The lower deck is used by vehicles, while the upper deck is used by Porto’s Metro, and both decks have walkways for pedestrians. The Porto Metro has been using the upper deck since 2005, nearly 120 years after the bridge was completed, a testament to the adaptability and durability of its 19th-century engineering.

As seen in the image, the steep terrain on both sides of the bridge helps explain the need for its unusual two-level design. The lower deck connects the areas near the river, while the upper deck connects the much higher ground on either side of the Douro.

The tall stone pylon near the Porto end of the bridge, also seen beside the entrance in the Porto Entrance to the Lower Deck, is a surviving remnant of the Ponte Pênsil, the suspension bridge that preceded the Dom Luís I Bridge.

Visible on the right is a surviving section of the Muralha Fernandina (Fernandine Wall), the medieval defensive wall built around Porto during the 14th century.

Seen through the great iron arch is the Ponte do Infante D. Henrique (2003), a modern single-arch bridge used by vehicular traffic.
