A Bird’s-Eye View from Vila Nova de Gaiy
Captured from an elevated viewpoint in Vila Nova de Gaia, this bird’s-eye view provides a perspective of the Dom Luís I Bridge, looking across the Douro River toward Porto. Almost the entire bridge is visible, with its enormous arched iron trusswork supporting the upper and lower decks.
Notice the modern Metro train crossing the upper deck, while the lower deck carries road and pedestrian traffic much closer to the river. The Porto Metro has been using the upper deck since 2005, nearly 120 years after the bridge was completed—a testament to the adaptability and durability of its 19th-century engineering.
Visible beyond the bridge is Porto’s historic center, rising steeply from the Ribeira waterfront toward the upper city. Porto Cathedral, with its twin bell towers, can be seen on the skyline to the left. Also visible on the right is a surviving section of the Muralha Fernandina (Fernandine Wall), the medieval defensive wall built around Porto during the 14th century. The tall stone pylon near the Porto end of the bridge is a surviving remnant of the Ponte Pênsil, the suspension bridge that preceded the Dom Luís I Bridge.
