Scenic view of the Douro River
Looking downstream from the upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge, this image captures the scenic beauty of the Douro River as it winds between Porto’s historic Ribeira waterfront on the right bank and Vila Nova de Gaia on the opposite bank before flowing toward the Atlantic Ocean. Visible in the distance with its imposing concrete arch is the Arrábida Bridge, a modern road bridge that carries vehicular traffic.
Check the similar image that captures the scenic beauty of the upstream Douro, showing three bridges: Infante D. Henrique, Maria Pia, and São João.
The elevated viewpoint provides an excellent view of Ribeira’s historic buildings rising above the waterfront. As seen in the image, the busy quays, restaurants and cafés, pedestrians, and traditional boats make Ribeira one of the most recognizable areas of Porto. The Ribeira district forms part of the Historic Centre of Porto, which, along with the Dom Luís I Bridge, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996.
The broad, winding river, historic waterfronts, steep green hillsides, boats, and distant Arrábida Bridge create a delightful downstream panorama of the Douro from the upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge.
